Caroline Roberts

I am one of the Founder Members of Mote Runners and the Club Membership Secretary.

10 years ago I was inspired to start running by friends, who were training for the Virgin London Marathon. In the beginning I felt very unfit and started with walk/runs until I could eventually run 5k without stopping, quite an achievement for someone who hadn’t run since leaving school!

As my distance and stamina improved I started to enter road races and thoroughly enjoyed the fun and exhilaration of running with so many other like minded people. This then led to cross country races, which were very hard going but excellent for building stamina, strength and muscle. I have over the years completed lots of different distance races; 5k, 10k, 10mile, half marathons and 1 full marathon. I am currently training for the Virgin London Marathon 2020.

During the last 10 years of running I have had a few setbacks, twice after accidents (not running related) that stopped me running for many months and the usual short term interruptions from muscle and tendon niggles. Each time I have returned to running after these breaks I have found that my overall health, physically and mentally, greatly improves. I find my asthma almost disappears and I get far fewer colds. With regards to mental health running is such beneficial form of therapy.

I find running is quite addictive, the more I run the more I want to run, it’s good for the brain; it clears my head and leaves me feeling so much happier. My favourite runs are in the summer on trails through the countryside, preferably with a stop for lunch at the pub!

Running has given me so much over the years; fitness, improved health and well being but most importantly friendship.
